President’s Message
The Board of Directors and membership of BCRC have embarked on a land use review of Baileys Crossroads business and commercial areas during BCRC monthly meetings.
Supervisor Penny Gross told the BCRC board and membership at the most recent meeting that she hoped BCRC could create a map of preferred land uses in the Southeast quadrant of Baileys Crossroads, using a 20+ year horizon. The BCRC land use choices will be given to the Fairfax County Planning and Zoning Department, which is currently paying a consultant to do much the same thing.
The consultant’s effort has generated negative comment as it has been presented in meetings thus far. The Citizens Advisory Council appointed to advise the consultant, as well as attendees at a broader meeting of stakeholders of all kinds, criticized the current land use ideas heavily in meetings during the last two weeks.
The first land use session occurred in the regular July BCRC meeting. BCRC’s August 18 meeting will continue to review land use policy for the future. All are welcome at BCRC meetings.

“An Evening with Mr. Lincoln”, as presented by James A. Getty to a full house at the Terrace Theater on the night of June 11 was a superb achievement for the fledgling Lincoln at the Crossroads Alliance. LATCRA founder and BCRC board member Maria Elena Schacknies said she couldn’t be happier with the results. The evening was a fund raising event to continue LATCRA’s preparations for the 2011 recreation of Lincoln’s Grand Review of the Troops in Baileys Crossroads.
The 600-seat Terrace Theater was almost a sellout, and audience members raved about the performance of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania resident James Getty’s portrayal of Lincoln. Getty brought Lincoln to life in vignettes from Lincoln’s youth, law career, and presidency, including family life in the White House. A highlight of the evening was an unveiling of the Lincoln statue being developed by renowned sculptor Ron Tunison to be placed along the parade route in Baileys Crossroads. It portrays Lincoln standing tall in a top hat gazing at a tableau showing soldiers marching by during the 1861 troop review along today’s Route 7 in Baileys Crossroads.
